How to pay back your student loans as cheaply and quickly as possible

Run Your Money Newsletter

Hi Reader,

If you have student loans, you know that repayment is not as simple or straightforward as paying off your mortgage.

Combining their already complicated nature with so much change, payments restarting, forgiveness, one-time adjustments, and SAVE, it can be difficult to know how to get your loans forgiven or pay them back in the most cost-effective way.

So when I came across Student Loan Planner, I knew they'd have to be a guest on my podcast! The founder, Travis, has *poured* through studentaid.gov and knows every rule and loophole in the book.

Here's what I want you to do if you have student loans:

1) Listen to this week's episode on Run Your Money! Seriously, there are rules and loopholes you probably don't know about that can *literally* save you thousands.

2) If you need personalized support, book a consultation with them.

I'm so impressed by their depth of knowledge that I've partnered with them.

If you book through my link, you'll get a free mini-Run Your Money Session with me OR $200 off my 6-week Run Your Money Roadmap.

Check them out here.

Best,
Veronica

PS - If you book a consultation with them through my link, email me to let me know.

I recommend having your consultation with them first so you can know exactly what your payments will be. That'll then help us to put together your financial plan better in your RYM session(s).

How to Pay Back Your Student Loans As Cheaply and Quickly As Possible

If you're grappling with student loans, you're certainly not alone.

The ever-evolving world of student loans can be a financial minefield, and understanding the latest developments is crucial.

Student loans DO NOT operate like other loans, and paying them back, especially in the most cost-effective way, can be a confusing and overwhelming endeavor.

In this blog post and podcast episode, my guest and I will explore the current state of student loans, recent policy changes, and a new repayment program that could change the game.

My guest, Becca, is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and consultant with Student Loan Planner, a service designed to help borrowers untangle the complex web of student loan repayment.

Becca explains the intricate nature of student loans and the lack of clarity surrounding the best repayment options tailored to individual situations.

Don't miss last Friday's Q&A episode:

Many people can't afford to buy expensive things, not because they don't have money, but because they don't manage it well.

Have a burning money question for me?

Can I set up a 529 for a kid before they're born? Can I have one 529 for multiple kids?

Ok - I'll have to do a full podcast episode on 529s because I get many questions about them!

Even if you aren't 100% sure your kids will go to college, you'll almost certainly be better off having one than not. I explain why here.

You can set up a 529 for anyone, including yourself! The beneficiary also doesn't have to be a dependent, so you can set one up for nieces/nephews, godchildren, or whoever you want. However, you can only have one beneficiary per account.

So yes, if you want to set up a 529 for a future kid, you'd make yourself the beneficiary.

After they're born and you have their SSN, then you change the beneficiary on the 529 to your kid. Any subsequent children you have will need their own account.

📈 Just Keep Buying: I know more about investing than most people, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this book by finance blogger Nick Maggiulli, and learned a ton. If you're a bit nerdy and want to understand the numbers to make the most optimal decisions- like how much to save versus how much to spend on life right now- you'll love Nick's approach.

I also tend to be pretty risk averse regarding my investing: stick to index funds. While Nick largely favors index funds, too, he introduces you to other investing options if you're curious! Check it out here.

See you next week!

Run Your Money Newsletter 🚗 Taking the Road Less Judged! 🚀 Hey there, fellow financial adventurers! Many boomer personal finance experts are all about spending as little as humanely possible. (I'm looking at you, Suze Orman, even though I think you're amazing and I loved your book when I was young, fabulous, and broke.) But generally - telling people to spend as little as possible, with no nuance, is bad advice. Last week, we wrapped up our first road trip in a mini-van that we purchased new...
